Has been a wild year and sorry for the super lengthy absence. I want to end the year with a brief countdown of my top 10 Kpop songs from the year. Will this open on anyone’s phone? It wouldn’t be my blog if it did! Enjoy!
#10: Seoul (Such a Beautiful City) by H1-Key
It has a fun 80’s vibe, and cracks me up by how wildly unspecific it is to Seoul. Along with the video, you could easily claim it was about any city if you did not know the title. So odd.
#9: Girls Capitalism by Triple S
The title alone is iconic. It’s a lovely feel good song from a group with 10s of rotating members.
#8: Stranger by Sunmi
My gorgeous favorite Kpop diva made this random spooky Halloween bop. No notes.
#7 Cheeky by Elyz Up
A group of stars from various C list groups formed on a reality competition show. I love all that and the song is catchy fun.
#6: Good Day by Weeekly
This song from this group that unfortunately is slumping in popularity in Korea, has amazing “WE ARE HAVING FUN OKAY?” energy. Something about pounding angrily on a school desk and screaming “IT’S A GOOD DAY” really spoke to me this year.
#5: Maniac by Viviz
Viviz, former members of the incredible group GFriend, are true experts of pop catchiness and this one does not dissapoint.
#4: Better Things by Aespa
Aespa had more successful super sassy songs like Spicy and Drama this year, but this midtempo sad yet resilient bop was my favorite, and the video is randomly breathtaking in its use of special effects.
#3: Super Shy by NewJeans
A super upbeat song about being shy that heavily samples the Powerpuff Girls themesong. Genuis.
#2: Off the Record by Ive
Ive began 2023 with a hugely sucessful product-placement filled bop in I Am, and then end it by trying unsucessfully to go full kitty bad girl with Baddie. But my favorite from them was this sweet and quirky B side, which features an amazing vocal run at the end.
#1: Queencard by G-Idle
G-Idle have truly mastered pop music, and this amazingly audacious song with a wildly bizarre and glamorus video to match was top, as they say themselves.
